February 2016

Danny Care

“This month’s Hotlist introduction comes from Danny Care, Harlequin’s and England Rugby Union scrum half who is in the squad for this month’s RBS Six Nations.” Jenny Halpern Prince "There’s nothing better than the buzz around Twickenham on Six Nations match day. Hopefully I’ll be involved, in particular, for our first home game against Ireland on 27th February. The Irish always travel en masse and the game intensity rarely disappoints – though I expect, as a supporter, the hustle around Twickenham, St Margaret’s and Richmond for lunch and a few pre-game drinks to settle the nerves is at least as much fun! South-West London has it all when it comes to family atmosphere and I know the Quins’ crew at the Stoop are sure to have lots going on, on the day too." Danny Care

The End of Longing

Friends fans across the globe have rejoiced about the rumours of late that a reunion is on the cards but alas Matthew Perry has already said he won’t be involved, in part due to his lead role at the Playhouse Theatre in new play The End of Longing. The production is Perry’s playwriting debut and sees four ‘lost souls’ on the brink of their forties who spend a raucous night together in an LA bar. They subsequently find their lives tangled together on a ‘rollercoaster journey’ forcing them to confront their relationships. The production premieres on the 2nd February and runs through to the 14th May. It’s hailed as a sharply written and hilarious dark comedy and certainly any fan of Matthew Perry would expect nothing less than some laughs from the man himself. Click here to buy tickets for what is certainly going to be a hugely popular production, directed by the award winning Lindsay Posner who also directed Speed the Plow in 2014 with Lindsay Lohan. Magical Lantern Festival

It was hard to avoid last month’s Lumiere Festival in the capital, organisers even had some attractions switched off due to the overcrowding popularity. We at Halpern thought it was brilliant and only wished it had been on for longer. Well fear not as this month sees the opening of the Magic Lantern Festival at Chiswick House and Gardens. Never ones to let the early dark evenings dampen our spirits, Londoners can enjoy the “extravaganza of lights, culture, art and cuisine” from the 3rd February until early March. The idea behind the event is to celebrate Chinese New Year 2016 in what is the year of the Monkey…cheeky. Walk the trail and encounter huge illuminated animals and lanterns including the tree of life, a whole terracotta army, palaces, temples and more. The elephants above are just a small teaser of what you can expect in what will be a treat for toute la famille. Tickets are around £12 and you can book your time slot through the website. Twitter

Lolly Adefope

Calling all comedy fans, we have a new gem to tell you about. 25 year old Lolly Adefope is not only The Independent’s “one to watch” she was also featured in the Evening Standard’s Fresh Faces of 2016 last month. And for good reason. She has already nailed a sold out show at the Edinburgh fringe and TV appearances in ‘Josh’ with Josh Widdicombe, ‘Plebs’ as well as “Lolly Adefope’s Christmas” as part of the Sky Comedy Shorts series (written and starring Lolly), and is set to co-star in the upcoming Sky series “Rovers”. This month sees her debut solo show at the Soho Theatre; a one person performance but with a variety of characters, Lolly’s razor sharp wit and character transformation makes for a side splitting show. So make sure to grab a ticket here for one of her three performances between the 18th and 20th of this month and see what all the widespread critical acclaim is about. Twitter

Le Bab

Kebabs - the historical fave of the drunken munch market? Well no more. For we are on the brink of a kebab renaissance and it is now a legitimate civilised dinner option too, in the form of new restaurant Le Bab. You can find them in Kingly Court headed up by an ex Le Gavroche team, serving up a seasonal menu representing the proper Turkish dish, as opposed to the blended meat of goodness knows what with limp lettuce that you find in some of the classier 3am establishments...! The menu takes inspiration from co-founder Stephen Tozer’s travel experiences and his business partner Ed Brunet trained at Le Gavroche and brings one of Le Gavroche’s sous chef’s with him on this new venture. You can choose from individual or sharing kebabs made using British produce and dishes include a free-range chicken shawarma with turban squash hummus and rare-breed pigs head with crackling, kohlrabi and carrot slaw. To accompany all this choose drinks from the extensive wine list of fine and rare wines. Long Live Le Bab! Twitter

Sea Life after Dark

A very wise crab once said “Darling it's better, Down where it's wetter, Under the sea….in the dark”. If you are inclined to agree with Sebastian (and his slightly altered quote) then you may be interested to hear about Sea Life After dark at the London Aquarium this month, on the day of luuuuurve, Valentine’s Day. Perfect especially therefore if your other half has a particular penchant for underwater life. Grab a glass of prosecco on arrival and stroll around getting to know the residents of this popular London establishment including sharks, turtles, stingrays and even some of Sebastian’s distant relatives. Doors open at 6.45pm and tickets will set you back around £29. If you fail to secure a ticket this month, fear not, because the same event is on in March, July and September of this year too! Valentine's Day

Midnight Apothecary

If you haven’t heard of The Brunel Museum then pay attention as you should know about it. Run by volunteers, the museum is an educational charity and tells the tale of one of the world’s engineering masters. Brunel held the first ever underground party on this site and it now celebrates this by hosting various musical oriented events here. On the 14th Feb, take your date, partner, lover or friends along and join St Valentine at the Midnight Apothecary for cocktails by campfire. For the bargain price of £5 you get entry to the museum, toasted marshmallows, and the opportunity to venture into the underground chamber for live readings plus a camp fire by which to warm your cockles with a cocktail in hand and entertained by music from the Nathan Osgood Trio. The money they raise from ticket sales is going towards a new entrance and staircase down to Brunel’s underground concert hall so you’re paying towards awesome future nights out! Win win. Twitter

Charity of the month

City Harvest London

City Harvest London is an inspirational charity that takes surplus high quality food and distributes it to various organisations that feed the hungry in the capital. Founded 18 months ago, they have made an extraordinary impact already having picked up over 65 tons from food donors and delivered to over 50 different community organisations who in turn have provided more than 150,000 nutritious meals. We really like those numbers but we can help them to make them bigger and better. In New York, City Harvest now rescues 50 tons of food a day so you can see where the potential lies in London too. With the typically droll British weather at this time of year, more people than ever are seeking warmth and a decent meal in any of the over 30 emergency Winter Shelters that are open around London. With additional support from us City Harvest can get another van and driver on the roads delivering even more food. Without this the food will go to landfill, this utterly wasted and we have to help avoid this happening. City Harvest are in the middle of a fundraiser at the moment to raise the funds for this van and driver so to support their Winter Drive to End Hunger click here. Also check out their website for full info on all the great work they do. Twitter
